Bacteria infested flakes of dry skin from people
offer mites a rich source of food. The reproductive rate of dust mites
is very high. Up to 2,000 mites have been counted in one gram of dust
which means that there are up to two million mites in one double size
mattress. Each mite excretes approximately 20 pellets a day which
contain allergens in the form of protease enzymes. These can attack
the protective lining of the nose, throat and lungs. Moving around in
bed makes the allergens airborne and easy to inhale, stimulating the
body's immune system and triggering the symptoms of asthma and
possibly causing other problems as well.
Some people vacuum their mattresses on a regular basis. This may be causing concentrations of airborne dust particles to increase rather than decrease. Why? Household vacuums are not very effective in removing dust from mattresses. If you are using a portable household vacuum that does not have HEPA filtration capabilities then you are most likely venting the dust from the mattress into the air via the vacuum. Remember that this dust is mostly microscopic in size so you won't be able to see it with the naked eye. Even HEPA filtration vacuums or central vacuums can cause an increase in airborne particles when used on your mattresses. The reason for this is the fact that the dust and dirt cannot be removed by suction alone. Most of the dust containing dust mites and their excrement, bacteria infested skin flakes and house dust will be drawn to the surface of the mattress where it will clog up in the material under the mattress cover. When this happens it creates problems when you sleep at night as this dust is now closer to you in greater concentrations and it will get 'puffed' into the air every time someone moves on the mattress. This results in higher airborne dust concentrations that can trigger allergy symptoms and asthma attacks. |
Dust mite excrement is a cause of allergies and
related problems such as asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, inflammation
of the mucous membranes, reddening of the eyes and itching. It can
also be a contributory factor to skin diseases including dermatitis
and eczema. Asthma in particular, is increasing at an alarming rate
among children worldwide and 85% of people with asthma have been found
to have an allergy to the dust mite.

Facts about dust mites
House dust mites, dermatophagoides farinae,
are a tiny member of the spider family. Food Source: Their main food source is dander, both human and
animal skin flakes. Since we spend one third of our lives on a mattress,
the mattress is a popular home for the dust mite. Mattresses supply dust
mites with an abundant food source and moisture from our bodies as we
sleep provides mites with water for absorption. Dust mites must absorb
water to survive and therefore they thrive in humid conditions.
